Portsmouth Harbour narrows to roughly 200 metres at its mouth, then opens inland across some 15 square kilometres of tidal water. Three architectural layers frame the anchorage. The second is iron and brick — the age of HMS Warrior, launched in 1860 as the Royal Navy's first iron-hulled armoured warship, and of the Victorian mast pond and boathouses. The third is glass and cable: the 170-metre Spinnaker Tower, opened in 2005 above Gunwharf Quays, its two white arcs answering the sail shapes below.
